Drupal and SEO

March 5, 2009

Wow, this was an information packed session, crammed perfectly into the time slot.  Definitely the best presentation I saw today, in terms of having engaging presenters and being on point.  Lots of notes to follow.

A few notes about SEO, that I think are important for regular people to know:

  • SEO is not fast
  • SEO is not a trick
  • SEO is time consuming
  • SEO is all about effective communication - both with the search engines, and ultimately your site’s users.
  • The bottom line is, you need a good online strategy to make money online.
There are a number of things that can be done to help boost your SEO:
  • Research!  Know your field thoroughly, so that you can plan accordingly.
  • Good site architecture:
    - text navigation instead of images, keywords in your navigation, semantic markup, using keywords in heading tags, using meaningful anchor text (i.e. “find out about baseball training in your area” (good) vs. “click here to find out about baseball trainers” (bad)).
  • Inbound links - 90% of the work that a SEO person does is building good inbound links.  How?  Call businesses in your area to get them to link to you, submit your site to yahoo and dmoz.org directories, blog on other websites, post your content to twitter, facebook, delicious, and other social networking sites.
  • Simple tip: buy a lengthy domain registration - google doesn’t trust you if your domain expires soon!
  • Taxonomy - taxonomy tags are IMPORTANT!  Put them in an h1 somewhere!
  • Are meta tags useful?  Title is, keywords… not so much.  Description is not useful for SEO, but its what the search engines show, so it can be useful for click-through rates.  The geolocation tag IS important and underused - it tells google where you are!
  • Drupal works pretty well out of the box when it comes to SEO, which is a great thing to know!
That’s enough for now, I highly recommend checking out the page at the drupalcon website - hopefully they will post their notes soon!
